Definition of Botox

Botox became popular in the cosmetic surgery as it instantly removes the wrinkles and deep fine lines in the face. This is actually obtained from the botolinum toxin type A which can cause paralysis when consumed in the human body. Botolinum toxin is found in an unsanitary meat preparation. This is the most common cause of food poisoning.

However, its paralytic effects can be a great help in improving a person’s appearance. Only a few amount of toxin is incorporated in botox injection treatments so it imposes a tiny threat on a person.

Applying Botox Injection

Botox comes in an injection preparation and it is injected on the muscles of the forehead, neck as well as the skin surrounding the eyes in which wrinkles and fine lines are apparent. The botox will block the nerve impulse transmission of the injected muscles thereby causing a relaxed and smooth skin.

The botox might give a little discomfort when injected on the muscles but the surgeon usually applies anaesthetic cream so that pain is controlled. Ice packs are also applied on the injected area in order to minimize numbness. The entire treatment will take about 10 minutes without creating any large or small incisions on the face.

A person undergoing the botox treatment will not be advised to lie down or even bend over for at least 6 hours right after the injection process. This is done in order for the toxin to remain only in the injected part and aside from that; it will decrease the likelihood of spreading the toxin to the neighbouring muscles.

The botox injection will usually take 4 days to take its full effect. On the fourth day, the muscles will start to relax and a wrinkle free face is obtained. However, this is only useful for four months that is why botox injections are recommended every 3 to 6 months.

Benefits of Botox Injections

It will take four days before a botox injection will take its full effect. The wrinkles will be gone in areas where botox are injected. This also means that the laugh lines, crow’s feet and frown lines are alleviated. This relaxes the skin and muscles of the face that is why a person will look fresh and young with botox injections. But a person is required to take these injections every 3 to 6 months as its paralytic effect will take off by that time.

Risks of Botox Injections

It is important to inform the surgeon any heart disease or nerve/muscle disorders that are present. Nerve or muscle disorders like ALS or the myasthenia gravis will become worse if botox is introduced in the body. Thus, proper assessment should be done before taking any botox injections.

Consulting to a qualified plastic surgeon is highly recommended in order to get the safest botox injections. The costs for these injections may vary from hospital or surgeon but it is best to have it done by a surgeon that has the necessary credential and expertise.
